Planning a quinceañera is a big deal, and the day can be filled with excitement and chaos.
To make sure your quinceañera photos turn out beautifully and capture the essence of your special day, follow these six tips from a photographer's perspective.
1. Communicate With Your Court of Honor
Communication is crucial! Both quinceañeras and their moms should discuss the schedule and expectations with the court of honor and their parents.
A week before the quinceañera, remind the chambelanes to get their haircuts two days before the event and ensure their suits are ready.
Similarly, the damas should get their nails and hair done at least two days prior, try on their gowns, and make any necessary adjustments.
There have been times when I arrive at the quinceañera's home, and the chambelanes are out getting their haircuts or a dama's dress doesn't fit correctly.
Sometimes, the court of honor is unaware of the plan for the day, like going to a park for photos.
Give everyone a clear idea of what to expect, even if it means repeating yourself multiple times.
Clear communication will help avoid unnecessary stress.
2. Prepare Your Dress the Night Before
How long has your dress been in the garment bag?
Did you take it to the cleaners to be pressed, or will you do it yourself?
Often, the dress will need ironing, and you don't want to realize this on the morning of your quinceañera.
Here's a plan: during the week leading up to the quinceañera, take the dress out of the garment bag.
Get someone to help you iron it, ideally three days before the event.
If you must do it the morning of, make it the first task of the day.
Ask for help from your sister, mom, or aunt.
It’s going to be a long day, so having the dress ready will be one less thing to worry about.
Hang the dress on your closet door or lay it out on a bed the night before to avoid any last-minute wrinkles.
3. Keep Jewelry and Accessories Nearby
When it comes to your quinceañera wardrobe, don’t forget the jewelry and accessories.
This includes shoes, tiara or crown, ring, necklace, bouquet, and hair accessories. Place them near the dress or somewhere easily accessible.
If your photographer arrives early, they will likely ask for these items right away to capture detailed shots.
Keeping everything together will help you stay organized and ensure you don’t forget anything when leaving the house.
4. Book Your Hair and Makeup Appointments Early
Booking your makeup artist and hairstylist early is essential. Schedule appointments as early as 7 AM if possible.
This allows enough time for everyone, including mom, grandma, sisters, damas, cousins, and friends, to get ready.
Aim to have hair and makeup done three hours before you need to leave. It typically takes about two hours to complete hair and makeup, and another hour to put on the dress, jewelry, and accessories.
Remember, the photographer will be taking pictures during this time, so it’s important to have a buffer.
5. Get Plenty of Rest the Night Before
Make sure you get plenty of rest the night before your quinceañera.
The day before might be hectic with final rehearsals, last-minute errands, or getting your nails and hair done.
Agree on a bedtime as a family. The day will start early, and you’ll need all the energy you can get.
6. Have a Hearty Breakfast and Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water and eat well the day before your quinceañera.
On the morning of the event, have a big breakfast and continue to stay hydrated throughout the day.
It’s going to be a long day, and you might not have another chance to eat until dinner at the reception.
Remind your court of honor and family to do the same.
Staying nourished and hydrated will keep everyone feeling their best.
Bonus: Listen to Your Photographer
